RBI Shortens CRR and SLR Exemption Period for Banks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently enacted amendments to the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) guidelines, shortening the exemption periods for various types of banks, including commercial banks, regional rural banks (RRBs), urban co-operative banks (UCBs), and small finance banks for Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR(B)) and Non-Resident External (NRE) deposits.

The newly defined exemption timeline is now set to conclude on August 31, 2026, replacing the prior deadline of September 30, 2026. This amendment aims to streamline the regulatory framework to better align with current economic conditions and banking sector liquidity requirements.

RBI’s move underscores its commitment to foster a more robust banking environment, encouraging financial institutions to optimize liquidity while fulfilling regulatory commitments. The initiative allows banks to adapt quickly to changing financial landscapes by ensuring that they can manage their CRR and SLR effectively.

Banking professionals and compliance officers should take note of this change, as it necessitates timely adjustments in their liquidity management strategies and compliance frameworks to align with the RBI’s updated timelines.
