Prof. (Dr.) Pinaki Ghosh, the DPIIT IP Chair Professor at West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences (WBNUJS), passed away on 31 March 2026 at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness. His contributions to intellectual property law spanned academia, policy advocacy, and institution-building, particularly in the field of geographical indications (GIs).
During his tenure at WBNUJS from 2019 to 2026, Dr. Ghosh played a pivotal role in advancing GI awareness and facilitated the filing of nearly 24 GI applications. A trained scientist and legal scholar, he bridged technical and legal domains, mentoring students and collaborating with stakeholders to protect traditional knowledge and rural livelihoods.
Colleagues remember him as a passionate educator and tireless advocate for accessible IP systems. His legacy includes capacity-building programs, publications on biotechnology patents, and policy inputs to governmental bodies. The Indian IP community mourns the loss of a visionary leader whose interdisciplinary approach shaped a generation of IP professionals.
