The Indian intellectual property community mourns the passing of Prof. (Dr.) Pinaki Ghosh, DPIIT IP Chair Professor at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), who died at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness. His tenure, which concluded on 31 March 2026, was marked by transformative contributions to IP education and Geographical Indication (GI) policy in India.
During his time at WBNUJS, Prof. Ghosh played a pivotal role in advancing 24 GI applications, fostering collaborations between local producers and legal experts. His interdisciplinary approach bridged science, law, and economic development, particularly in rural and artisanal sectors. A respected scholar and mentor, he guided numerous students and researchers in patent law, biotechnology IP, and traditional knowledge protection.
