Remembering Professor (Dr.) Pinaki Ghosh
Professor (Dr.) Pinaki Ghosh, the former DPIIT IP Chair Professor at West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences (WBNUJS), passed away on March 31, 2026, after a prolonged illness. He was 61. His tenure, which ended just days before his passing, was marked by deep commitment to intellectual property law, especially in the area of Geographical Indications.
Under his leadership, WBNUJS advanced nearly 24 GI applications, significantly contributing to the recognition and protection of regional products. Colleagues recall his interdisciplinary approach—bridging science, law, and policy—and his mentorship of students and young professionals in the IP field.
His passing marks the loss of a respected academic and advocate for accessible IP systems in India. The legal community, particularly in the eastern region, mourns a stalwart who combined scholarship with public service. His efforts continue to inform ongoing GI and IP awareness initiatives.
