RBI Withdraws ₹2000 Denomination Banknotes from Circulation

May 23, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India has confirmed its withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes, with deposit and exchange facilities available until October 7, 2023. This move is part of the RBI's ongoing efforts to streamline currency circulation.

RBI's Withdrawal of ₹2000 Denomination Banknotes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation, as outlined in its Press Release dated May 19, 2023. This decision aims to enhance the country's currency management and promote the usage of lower denomination notes.

As per the RBI's schedule, the availability for deposit and exchange of ₹2000 banknotes at all bank branches across the nation will cease on October 7, 2023. Following this date, users will be required to transact with lower denominations.

“The status of withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes is periodically published by the RBI.”

Legal practitioners should note the implications this has for clients holding ₹2000 notes, as post-withdrawal, these notes will not be valid for transactions. The RBI's move signals a tighter control over high-value currency notes and encourages clients to shift to smaller denominations.
