July 25, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India has issued second amendment directions for Small Finance Banks focusing on income recognition processes to enhance their financial viability.

Revised Guidelines for Small Finance Banks

On July 16, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India announced the release of RBI/2026-27/196, presenting the second amendment directions concerning income recognition, asset classification, and provisioning for Small Finance Banks.

These amendments are crafted under sections 21 and 35A of the Banking Regulation Act to safeguard the interests of depositors and ensure that small finance banks manage their assets efficiently.

By refining the guidelines for income recognition and provisioning, the RBI aims to enhance the stability and robustness of small finance banks, fostering trust among stakeholders and promoting better sustainability.

Legal consultants must prepare their clients for these significant changes in the operational framework that will require adjustments to current compliance processes and introduce new operational challenges.
