RBI Amends Priority Sector Lending Classification

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the second amendment to its directions regarding Priority Sector Lending (PSL) targets and classifications. This significant update includes modifications that financial institutions must adopt to meet evolving lending objectives as of August 7, 2026.

This amendment is in response to earlier statements made by the RBI Governor and is part of a continual effort to streamline PSP initiatives. Specifically, these changes entail the introduction of a US Dollar-Rupee swap facility, which is expected to support foreign currency Non-Resident (B) deposits among other priorities.

The RBI's aim is to enhance accessibility and encourage banking services to sectors that are often underrepresented in traditional lending frameworks, promoting inclusivity and stability in the financial system. The revisions compel institutions to reassess their lending strategies and reallocate resources to align with the updated PSL framework.

“The BJP is keen on reforming lending practices to foster efficient financial inclusion,” mentioned a source at the RBI.

Financial practitioners must stay abreast of these amendments as they directly influence credit disbursement strategies, compliance mechanisms, and the overall economic engagement of banks with priority sectors.
