The Indian intellectual property community mourns the passing of Prof. (Dr.) Pinaki Ghosh, former DPIIT Chair Professor in Intellectual Property Rights at West Bengal National University of Judicial Sciences (WBNUJS), who died at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.
Dr. Ghosh served at WBNUJS from 2019 until March 2026, where he played a pivotal role in advancing geographical indication (GI) awareness and applications. Under his leadership, nearly 24 GI applications were advanced, reflecting his commitment to grassroots IP protection and academic excellence. Colleagues remember him as a bridge between technical innovation, legal doctrine, and public policy.
His work spanned biotechnology, pharmaceutical patents, and traditional knowledge protection, influencing curriculum development and policy advocacy. He was known for mentoring young scholars and practitioners in IP law. His passing marks a significant loss to legal education and the broader IP ecosystem in India.
