The Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank), with support from the Government of India (GOI), has entered into an agreement dated July 25, 2025, to provide a Line of Credit (LOC) of ₹4,850 crore to the Government of the Republic of Maldives. The LOC is intended to finance developmental projects in the island nation, reinforcing India's strategic and economic engagement in the region.

The initiative is part of India’s broader framework of economic diplomacy and development cooperation with neighbouring countries. Projects funded under such LOCs typically span infrastructure, healthcare, renewable energy, and digitisation. Authorised Dealer Category-I banks are responsible for processing disbursements and monitoring end-use of funds in accordance with the terms of the agreement and RBI’s operational guidelines.

From a legal standpoint, practitioners involved in project finance, export contracts, or public international law should review the modalities of such LOCs, including sovereign guarantees, procurement norms (often tied to Indian suppliers), and compliance with multilateral standards. These instruments carry implications for cross-border contracting, arbitration clauses, and sovereign immunity considerations.
